Mumbai, Dec 31 - A benchmark index of Indian equities was trading flat at 21.81 points or 0.10 percent up during the pre-noon trade Tuesday.

Good buying was observed in the oil and gas and auto sectors while selling pressure was seen in banking index (bankex) sector.

The 30-scrip sensitive index (Sensex) of the S&P Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 21,177.77 points, was trading at 21,164.82 points in the pre-noon session, up 21.81 points or 0.10 percent from the last trading day's close at 21,143.01 points.

A former deputy governor at the Bank of England, Paul Tucker has been given a knighthood for his services to banking in the New Year's Honours list.

Sir Paul was in the race to become the head of the central bank but the decision went in favour of Canadian Mark Carney, who took over the institution when Mervyn King stepped down as the the governor of the Bank of England. He left the bank to take a senior fellowship at Harvard after more than 30 years at the key institution.

According to the latest figures released, the housing prices have increased in England and Wales by around 4.4 per cent during the year, 2013.

The data also showed that the housing prices rise the highest at around 9 per cent in London during the good year for the housing market backed by support schemes from the government and increasing demand. Demand for housing units remained much higher than availability and this pushed up prices across the UK including in southern England.
