Malaysian police bust heroin laboratoryKuala Lumpur  - Malaysian police busted a heroin laboratory and seized drugs estimated to be worth 6.4 million ringgit (1.95 million dollars), arresting one suspect, news reports said Wednesday.

During a night-time raid at a house in the northern Penang state, police detained one woman aged in her 40s along with an assortment of drugs and firearms.

Police seized four pistols, 64 rounds of ammunition, 9.1 kilogrammes of heroin base, 6.4 kilogrammes of heroin as well as cannabis, ketamine and caffeine, said state police chief Wira Ayub Yaakob.

He said the Indian authorities had denied newspaper reports that the terrorists had used Malaysian travel documents and credit cards.

This was revealed to the consul-general by senior police investigators but there is still no official statement from the Indian government on this so-called link.

Malaysia FlagKuala Lumpur - Malaysian Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak said Tuesday that disaster prevention efforts were insufficient in most Asian nations, and warned that countries ill-equipped to handle disasters would face increasingly high economic losses.

"It is acknowledged that not all disasters can be prevented, but their impact and all the underlying risks can be reduced," Najib, who is also Malaysia's finance minister, said at an Asian conference on disaster-risk reduction.

"Neverthless, such efforts have never been sufficient," he was quoted as saying by the official Bernama news agency.

Malaysian police find 15 kilograms of drugs at car crash site Kuala Lumpur  - Malaysian police found drugs worth more than 800,000 ringgit (232,000 dollars) while investigating a three-vehicle accident, a news report said Sunday.

Fourteen kilograms of heroin and a kilogram of ketamine were discovered inside one car involved in the crash. Police decided to search the vehicles before they were towed away.

On Saturday afternoon, a tourist bus driver lost control of his vehicle on a major expressway in the northern state of Perak and crashed into two cars, the News Straits Times reported.

Malaysian driving instructors flunk surprise test

Kuala Lumpur  - A surprise driving theory test on some 400 Malaysian driving instructors resulted in even more surprising results - a total of 65 per cent of them failed, a news report said Friday.

During a seminar in the northern state of Perak, 396 driving instructors were asked to take the driving theory exam, which student drivers must pass in order to obtain a license.

Only 35 per cent of the instructors passed, said director of the state road department Mohamad Yasir Mastakim.

"We will have refresher courses for them to improve their scores," he was quoted as saying by the Star daily.

The test comprises 50 multiple-choice questions, with 42 correct answers being the passing requirement, he said.

Many Tamil schools in Malaysia lack basic facilities

Kuala Lumpur, Nov. 27 : Many Tamil schools do not have basic facilities although the country has been independent for more than 50 years, Malaysia Nanban quoted Selangor state executive councillor Dr Xavier Jayakumar, as saying on Wednesday.

He said some schools were conducting their classes in warehouses and under trees.

He added that in the 1980s and 1990s, many parents were not interested in sending their children to Tamil schools due to the deplorable conditions, which made it unsafe for them.

He said the trend had changed and more Indian parents were eager to send their children to Tamil schools due to the excellent academic performance by students in such schools.
