USDA to use Vaccines to fight Bird Flu

The deadly bird flu outbreak infected and killed a number of chickens and turkeys in the United States. Now, to fight the disease, the United States Agriculture Department (USDA) has decided to use a vaccine.

Until now, the department has not allowed the farmers to vaccinate their flocks. According to the department, the process of vaccination could prompt wider import bans on the United States poultry and eggs in the $5.7 billion export market. Inoculations produce antibodies could make it difficult to find if a bird actually had the virus.

Author of a California Vaccine Bill confident of Reviving the Measure

State Senator Richard Pan proposed to levy a cap on the number of schoolchildren who should be exempted from being vaccinated is quite positive that his bill will move further.

The changes he has made include allowing families to opt out of vaccines to home-school their children and also, allowing students to seek independent study. Last week, the bill was delayed because members of the Senate Education Committee were concerned that the bill would prevent unvaccinated children from receiving proper education.

On Wednesday, the committee will vote. Due to the bill, a lot many debates have started. In fact, many opponents have gathered at the Capitol. But the bill has all the support from medical, education and public health groups.

Color Genomics’ Genetic Testing for Breast Cancer holds promise

Cancer screening is important because early detection is helpful in improving prognosis for the disease. Gene mutations account for up to 15% of breast and ovarian cancers. Keeping in mind the same, Color Genomics focused on genetic screening and has released a breast cancer test that is affordable and accessible.

The testing kit released by Color Genomics costs $249, which is a drastically smaller amount in comparison to several thousands of dollars that typical gene tests cost right now. The kit will simply need a saliva sample.

The company decided to require samples of the material because saliva is easier to collect as compared to blood, making it more convenient for a patient to use the Color Test.

Blue Bell Creameries recalls all its products due to Listeria contamination

After weeks of gradual recalls of products by Blue Bell Creameries, which distributes frozen desserts to about half of the United States, the company is now pulling all of its products off the shelves.

The company said that it was voluntarily recalling all of its products after the bacteria listeria was found in two cartons of ice cream last month.

On Tuesday, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) listed two additional victims that got sick by Listeria linked to products made by Blue Bell.

The agency said that tests indicated Blue Bell products from plants in Texas and Oklahoma were the source of a listeria outbreak that has infected five adults in Kansas, three of whom died.

No link between autism and vaccines: Study

It is thought since long that the vaccines have no link with autism. It has also been found in the latest study on the vaccines that childhood immunizations are not associated with autism. The study has been published in the American Medical Association.

It has been conducted by a group led by Dr. Anjali Jain of the Lewin Group, which is a health care consulting organization. According to Time, it was found in the study that siblings of children with autism didn’t have any higher risk of developing autism if they were vaccinated compared with siblings of those who didn’t have autism.

It was found by Dr. Jain that the vaccination rates in brothers and sisters of autistic children were much lower compared to those in families where there were no autistic children.

Florida teen critical after getting Snake Bite on Mouth

On Saturday, a Florida teen who had a deadly wild snake in his bedroom as a pet was bitten on the mouth and was taken to the hospital. He used to brag about how many times he'd kissed the snake.

Austin Hatfield, 18, got the venomous water moccasin, also known as a cottonmouth, near his Wimauma home previous week. He kept the snake in a pillowcase when it escaped over the weekend.

Hatfield's best friend Jason Belcher told Bay News 9 said that they were sitting in the kitchen, when suddenly Hatfield ran out of the room saying hospital, hospital, now. He was rushed to a Tampa hospital in critical condition.

Bites from the cottonmouth caused extreme swelling and can result into death. But leading up to the incident, Belcher said that Hatfield wasn't concerned at all.
