Youth in rural US communities more likely to commit suicide than those in urban areas

A new study has suggested that youth in rural US communities are more likely to commit suicide as compared to those in urban areas. The study has also found that the gap is mounting.

According to researchers, it was found that presently suicide is double as frequent in young rural American people as compared to those in urban areas. It has been assumed by authorities that reasons behind this could be lack of mental health services, better access to guns, isolation and poor economic conditions as compared those who survive in urban areas.

17-year-old Connecticut Teen, who initially refused Chemo, seeks Release from State Custody

Earlier, a 17-year-old Connecticut teen had refused to take treatment for highly curable cancer. Currently, the teen is in remission. On Monday, her lawyer said that the girl is seeking release to finish her chemotherapy at home.

While talking to NBC News, the girl, called only Cassandra C, said that she has changed her mind about undergoing chemotherapy. During the interview that was conducted through Facebook messages, the teen said, “I'm committed to finishing the rest of my chemo, which is 2 more cycles. I would love more than anything to be able to come home to finish it all. I miss my life so dearly, especially my mom, my cat and my boyfriend”.

People Are Not Narcissist by Birth, Says Study

Researchers through a recent study found the relationship between narcissistic children and parents who overvalue them. They told that people are not narcissists by birth, instead their parents push them on this path by praising them too much and adding the feeling of superiority in them.

According to Brad Bushman, a professor of communication and psychology at Ohio State University, loving one’s kid is quite healthy and good. But when parents start thinking that their child is better than other children, it can lead to narcissism.

The team during the study studied nearly 565 kids between the ages of 7 and 12. Parents of these kids were also interviewed every six months for continuous 18 months.

Fishermen catch 600-pound mako shark off Florida coast

According to a Florida fisherman, a 600-pound mako shark was caught by him and his crew while fishing off the coast in Panama City Beach. On Friday night, Matt Pemberton from the Off the Beach Shark Fishing group and his crew saw a mako shark weighing over 600 pounds.

Pemberton said that catching the fish was a long fight and they got really tired. It took an hour and a half later to catch the fish. Seven men made efforts to catch the 10-foot shark.

“It started off as a down trip really and we started fishing last night and hooked into that shark. It was pretty impressive I couldn't believe it. It just blew my mind to land something that big. I never expected anything like that”, said tourist Douglas Harlan, who was among the seven people who caught the shark.

Over 12% Rise in Prescription-Drug Spending Last Year in US

Rise of more than 12% was recorded in prescription-drug spending last year in the US, marking the biggest annual increase in over a decade. The figure was revealed by a report by the nation’s largest pharmacy benefit manager.

Specialty medicines played a pivotal role in a record rise in spending in the US last year. Pharmacy benefits manager Express Scripts said new drugs for hepatitis C, and those for inflammatory diseases, multiple sclerosis and cancer significantly contributed to the spending.

Express Scripts, the largest pharmacy benefits manager in the US, has been opposing high drug prices for hepatitis C treatments like Gilead Sciences' Sovadi, which requires a patient to spend $1,000 per day, or $84,000 for a 12-week course of treatment.

FDA issues warning regarding Pfizer's Chantix

It has been warned by the US Food and Drug Administration that Pfizer's anti-smoking drug, Chantix, leads to suicidal behavior and also causes other psychiatric side-effects. The agency issued the warning after it reviewed company findings, according to which the drug does not lead to such problems. The drug is reported to cause suicidal tendencies and aggressive or strange behavior among some patients.

On Monday, the FDA gave many updates about Chantix's labeling in which it also warned that the drug could also interact with alcohol. It has been reported by some patients that they experience bizarre or aggressive behavior, when they drink during the course of the drug.
