2 major milestones achieved towards making quantum computing a reality

Washington, Sept 27 : Scientists at Yale University have achieved two major steps towards putting quantum computers into real practice – sending a photon signal on demand from a qubit onto wires, and transmitting the signal to a second, distant qubit.

Over the past several years, the research team of Robert Schoelkopf and Steven Girvin have explored the use of solid-state devices resembling microchips as the basic building blocks in the design of a quantum computer.

Former Supreme Court judge files papers for Pak presidential polls

Islamabad, Sept.27 : Former Supreme Court judge, Justice Wajihuddin Ahmed, today filed his nomination for the October 6 presidential poll.

Justice Ahmed, 68, was the only Supreme Court judge who refused to swear allegiance to Musharraf after his 1999 coup. He was asked to resign from his post. Had he been a part of the Supreme Court bench, he would have become the country's Chief Justice.

Panabaka Lakshmi to lead delegation to Hungary

New Delhi, Sept. 27 : Union Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare Panabaka Lakshmi will lead an Indian delegation to Budapest, Hungary.

During her visit, she will inaugurate the “International Conference cum Exhibition on Ayurveda, Ancient System of Holistic Medicine from India” on Saturday.

Besides, she will also have bilateral meetings with officials of Health Insurance Fund, National Institute of Pharmacy, Debrecon University and Business Environment European team in Brussels.

International Railway Safety Conference from Oct. 1

New Delhi, Sept. 27 : More than 150 representatives from 15-20 countries including USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, France, Germany, and UK will participate in the International Railway Safety Conference (IRSC), scheduled to be held in Goa from October 1.

The five-day conference is being hosted by the Indian Railways and the Konkan Railway Corporation Ltd.

The conference is an annual event which will be attended by railway safety managers, safety regulators and accident investigating agencies from all over the world.

Kicking the bottle reduces cancer risk

Washington, September 27 : People who drink can significantly reduce their likelihood of suffering from cancers of head and neck by quitting alcohol consumption, a research at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) has suggested.

Principal Investigator Dr. Jurgen Rehm says that his study has shown an association between alcohol consumption and an increased risk for cancer of the oesophagus, larynx and oral cavity.

New Zealand squad for South Africa tour announced

Auckland, Sept.27 : Left arm spinner Daniel Vettori was today confirmed as New Zealand's 26th Test captain when he was chosen to lead the New Zealand cricket team on next month's two-test tour to South Africa.

Vettori replaces Stephen Fleming, New Zealand's captain for the past decade, who was dropped from the position earlier this month after resigning the limited-overs captaincy. Fleming, however, retained his place in the 15-man test squad as a specialist batsman.
