SC dismisses PIL seeking curbs on sale of Ranbaxy drugs

RanbaxyNew Delhi, June 25 : The Supreme Court Tuesday dismissed a petition for prohibiting Ranbaxy from producing and marketing its alleged "adulterated" medicines in the Indian market in the wake of reports of the pharma major having sold misbranded drugs in the US.

A bench of Justice A. K. Patnaik and Justice Ranjan Gogoi dismissed the Public Interest Litigation (PIL) by advocate M. L. Sharma, asking him to produce the material to show that drugs being marketed by the pharma major were substandard.

Haryana breaks power supply record

Haryana breaks power supply recordGurgaon, June 25 : The power transmission and distribution system in Haryana supplied an all-time high of 1,536.43 lakh units and took a record 7,527 MW load during peak hours Monday, an official said Tuesday.

The Dakshin Haryana Bijli Vitran (DHBVN) Nigam said that it was a new power supply record in the state.

The DHBVN and the Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran supplied over 1,536 lakh units of electricity Monday, which was 143 lakh units more than the power supplied on the corresponding day last year.

The nigams supplied 42.93 lakh units more than the demand.

India-South Africa trade to cross $18 bn in 3 years

India-South-AfricaKolkata, June 25 : The India-South Africa bilateral trade, which has been steadily growing, is expected to surpass the $18-billion-mark in the next three years, an official said Tuesday.

"India-South Africa mutual trade has been growing at a rate faster than expected. We had targeted the trade to breach the ($)15 billion mark by 2015 and by this year we have already reached $14.7 billion" said S. C. Pradhan, senior economic advisor at the South African High Commission in New Delhi.

Coal India to set up seven washeries this fiscal

Coal-IndiaKolkata, June 25 : The world's leading miner, Coal India Ltd (CIL) is planning to set up seven coal washeries at an estimated cost of Rs. 2,000 crore by the end of this fiscal, a company official said Tuesday.

"Contracts for seven coal washeries would be placed by financial year 2013-14 with washing capacity of 15-16 million tonnes of coal," said T. K. Sinha, general manager (project monitoring division).

Cooperatives must improve efficiency, says president

Pranab-MukherjeeNew Delhi, June 25 : President Pranab Mukherjee Tuesday said cooperatives should reorient themselves by improving their efficiency and develop professionally to meet the requirements of their clientele.

Addressing the 16th Indian Cooperative Congress here, the president said India has perhaps the largest and the most diverse cooperative movement across the globe.

"If we look at the contribution cooperatives are making in the world, we have a fair bit of catching up to do. We need a renaissance of sorts in the cooperative sector," the president said.
