Sabra to recall 30,000 cases of Hummus over Listeria Fear

The United States based company Sabra Dipping Company announced on Wednesday that it has decided to recall about 30,000 cases of famous classic hummus dip that could be contaminated with Listeria bacteria, a harmful genus of bacteria that contains 10 species, each containing two subspecies.

Listeria monocytogenes is known to have been the cause of several deaths in the past. Sabra, which is the world’s largest hummus manufacturer, is not the first company that has recalled its products. On April 7, Blue Bell removed a huge quantity of ice-cream when some of their products tested positive for the disease. Three individuals were poisoned with Listeria and died after consuming the products.

Swedish Match must not be allowed to Alter Warning Label on its Snus Smokeless Tobacco Products: FDA

An advisory panel to the US Food and Drug Administration said that Swedish Match must not be permitted to change the warning label on its snus smokeless tobacco products to claim they are less harmful compared to cigarettes.

The Stockholm-based company is looking for the FDA approval in order to remove warnings about mouth cancer, gum disease and tooth loss from its snus products and also to state that they offer a ‘substantially’ lower risk as compared to cigarettes.

Plucking Hairs May Stimulate hair growth

According to the Daily Mail, a cure for baldness has been found. But the discovery was made in mice, not humans.

The study looked at hair regeneration in mice. Results of the study showed that hair regeneration relied on the density at which hairs were removed. The researchers explained how hairs appeared to have a ‘sense and response’ process that works around a threshold.

When plucking during hair removal was below this threshold and no biological response was there to repair and regrow the hair, the mice remained bald.

Magnetosphere plays vital role in keeping earth safe from Sun's flares: Study

NASA’s new study has revealed that the Earth's life-sustaining atmosphere would have been severely affected by the Sun's flares if it did not have magnetosphere.

Magnetosphere acts like a natural magnetic bubble which helps protect a planet's atmosphere. In its absence, a planet's atmosphere is intensely vulnerable to eruptions from the Sun.

The magnetosphere on Earth has prevented it from becoming like Venus by deflecting some of the impact of the solar eruptions.

Venus is an inhospitable planet, which is 10 times hotter than the Earth. It possesses such a thick atmosphere that the longest any spacecraft had survived on its surface was for only two hours.

Caesarean sections should only be carried out when medically necessary: WHO

On Friday, the World Health Organization (WHO) called for careful use of caesarean delivery.

Caesarean section is one of the most common surgeries in the world and its rates have continued to rise particularly in high- and middle-income countries.

The WHO said that even though it can save lives, it is often performed without medical need and puts women and their babies at-risk of short- and long-term health problems.

Also, high rates of unnecessary caesarean sections can pull resources away from other services in overloaded and weak health systems.

‘Warm blob’ in Pacific Ocean responsible for weird US weather

The United States has seen weird weather so far in 2015. A new study has suggested that warm blob in the Pacific Ocean could be responsible for some of the weird weather in the United States this year. According to scientists, the blob is about 1,000 miles off the West Coast and stretches from Mexico to Alaska.

In a statement, Nick Bond, a climate scientist at the University of Washington and co- author of the study, said, “In the fall of 2013 and early 2014, we started to notice a big, almost-circular mass of water that just didn't cool off as much as it usually did. So by spring of 2014, it was warmer than we had ever seen it for that time of year”.
