Bangladesh’s anti-graft body finds 'no merit' in Khaleda Zia case

Dhaka, Oct 26 : Bangladesh’s Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has decided not to take into cognisance the corruption allegations against former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, saying they “lack merit”.

The cases against Zia pertain to the compensation for Magurchhara gas field blow-out and leasing out Phulbari coal zone to Asia Energy.

As per the findings of the preliminary enquiry about allegations against Khaleda, the anti-graft body has taken the decision that the allegations have no merit.

Child rights commission expresses grief over death of Ahmedabad schoolboy

New Delhi, Oct 26 : Expressing grief over the death of a Ahmedabad schoolboy during a punishment given for being late, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) today wrote a letter to the Gujarat Chief Secretary asking as to what actions have been taken following the incident.

In the letter addressed to state Chief Secretary Dr. Manjula Subramaniyam, NCPCR Chairperson Shanta Sinha said: “In the light of the foregoing, the Commission is terribly upset and very sad to hear about the death of Milan Tanna, a class 12th student of Sree Narayana Guru School, who was punished for being late to school.”

T.R. Baalu approves road repair works in Karnataka

New Delhi, Oct 26 : Union Minister of Shipping, Road Transport and Highways, T.R. Baalu has approved a sum of Rs.1254.61 lakh for road improvement works in Karnataka.

Baalu approved the proposal for widening of existing intermediate lane, single lane to two lane from km. 479 to 489 km on Sholapur Mangalore Section of National Highway-13.

Earlier, the road from Chitradurga to Shimoga was a Major District Road (MDR), and it used to cater the traffic volume, which was less compared to present traffic.

The existing crust is inadequate to take the present traffic intensity of commercial vehicles carrying heavy loads.

‘Declaring Gilgit a part of Pakistan is violation of UN resolution’

Srinagar, Oct 26 : Coming down strongly on Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf for declaring Gigit Baltistan region as a part of Pakistan, Jammu and Kashmir National Panthers Party (JKNNP) chief Bhim Singh has said that it is a complete violation of the 1948 United Nations (UN) resolution.

Singh expressed apprehensions that the declaration would threaten the peace prospects in South Asia.

“Converting the Gilgit council in to a Legislative Assembly and proclaiming the city to be popular city of Pakistan is unacceptable and uncalled for,” the NPP chief said at a recent press conference here.

He added that the 28000 sq kilometre area forms a part of the erstwhile State of Jammu and Kashmir, which could not be ceded away from it.
