SpaceX will make quick comeback, say analysts

SpaceX's Falcon 9 Rocket bound for the International Space Station (ISS) unfortunately exploded soon after the liftoff on Sunday, June 28. It was a big setback for the private space exploration company which NASA has hired for unmanned missions to send supplies to the ISS.

SpaceX was still making efforts last week to collect debris from the rocket. NASA is currently looking for other options to send supplies to the space station.

Most analysts believe that SpaceX will make a strong comeback by quickly learning what led to the Falcon 9 explosion and fixing it to launch more Falcon 9s from Cape Canaveral sometime this year.

Mammoth Genome reveals Difference from Elephants

A new study has helped researchers understand how mammoths are so different from elephant. Vincent Lynch, an evolutionary biologist who worked with the group, told the Los Angeles Times, said they look for changes in genes that enabled the woolly mammoth acclimatize to harsh conditions of the ice age.

The study showed that the furry giants managed to survive in subzero temperatures because of a metabolism that stored enough fat in their bodies to stay warm, in addition to smaller ears that had reduced sensitivity to cold and lost less heat.

The researchers extracted the mammoth DNA from the hair of two mammoths found in Siberia several years ago. The researchers determined that one mammoth died about 20,000 years ago and the other about 60,000 years ago.

Human Activities bring Polar Bears close to Extinction

Human-induced climate change has put polar bears at the risk of extinction. Studies have indicated towards survival threats being faced by polar bears due to fast melting of their natural habitat. The US Fish and Wildlife Service has said in a new report that it is very important to take immediate action to address the issue of the arctic warming.

The report has claimed that the polar bear issue is going beyond repair. "Polar bears are in big trouble. There are other steps we can take to slow the decline of polar bears, but in the long run, the only way to save polar bears in the Arctic is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions", said Rebecca Noblin, Alaska director for the Center for Biological Diversity.

67P and other Comets could be Homes for Living Microorganisms

As per leading astronomers, Philae could be present on a comet that is full of life. The theory was also presented when Philae was being made, but it was not considered worthy enough. Therefore, Philae was fitted with life- detecting kit.

The comet, 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko, has organic-rich black crust, which is said so because of the presence of living organisms beneath an icy surface. In fact, the spacecraft orbiting the comet has also picked up some organic material that looks like viral particles.

New Horizons Team plans to resume Normal Operations for probe by July 7

On July 4, NASA's New Horizons spacecraft lost contact with mission control for an hour and 21 minutes. NASA said the reason for the loss of contact is not known for now and the spacecraft went into safe mode. But now, the mission control has said that it plans to get back to normal operations on July 7.

NASA said the incident will not affect the plan of the mission's July 14 flyby. Engineers are in touch with the probe again but the agency stated that it will take many days before the probe gets back to its normal routine.

The spacecraft is approaching Pluto and is currently, 11 kms from Pluto and move fast. It is not the first time when New Horizons has lost contact. In March 2007, a memory error took place that led the spacecraft go into safe mode.
