Last week, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) announced that it plans to bring an additional 50 drugs belonging to the cardiovascular and anti-diabetic segment under price control. This is in addition to the 348 drugs that were brought under price control following the implementation of the new DPCO in July 2013.

New Delhi - A higher weight of food items in the consumer price index has kept retail inflation at elevated levels in the country, according to official data.

The high inflation in India owes to "higher weight for the food basket (about 50 percent)" as against 14 percent and 32 percent weights for Korea and China, respectively, according to the data.

The consumer price index-based inflation remained elevated at 9.5 percent in 2013 and 10.2 percent in 2012.
